The Experimental Study on the Mechanism of the Phagocytic Enhancement of the Reticuloendothelial System by Irradiation

Abstract
|
|
|
In order to investigate the mechanism of the. phagocytic enhancement by irradiation, the phagocytic activity was assessed by means of carbon clearance method in the male rats, irradiated on the whole body after oral administration of live bacteria or on the whole body and the lower extremities. The results were as follows.
1. In the rats of no treatment or the rats administered with E. coil, the phagocytic activity increased prominently 1 day after whole-body irradiation. Thereafter it decreased gradually, recovering to the normal value in 10 days. No significant difference, however, could be found in the pattern of the phagocytic activity between the two groups.
2. The rats irradiated on the lower extremities or on the exposed intestine showed somewhat increased phagocytic activity in 1day, whereafter it was in the range of the normal value. There was still no significant difference in the changes of the phagocytic activity between the two groups.
From these results it was concluded that the effect of endotoxin released by irradiation on the enhanced phagocytic activity. of the reticuloendothelial system was slight, whereas the other stimulating factors such as the direct effect of irradiation on the reticuloendothelial cells did dominant role.
